Johannesburg - Adam Liaw, winner of the second MasterChef Australia series, almost didn't participate in the globally watched competition.
Liaw is currently in South Africa and will be presenting cooking shows with chef Gordon Ramsay at the Good Food and Wine Show, which starts on Thursday:
"I entered the competition, was accepted and then temporarily came to my senses and let the producers know I am not coming anymore," Liaw jokingly said on Wednesday.
He realised the major impact of the filming of the series on his life when he had to quit his job as a lawyer with an Australian firm, and suddenly had to appear before millions of people if he wanted to participate.
Second book
"I lay awake for three nights over it and decided I can't throw this chance away. Although I really enjoyed my job as a lawyer, I also wanted to participate in the competition. "
Liaw phoned the producers of MasterChef Australia and because he wasn't replaced yet, he could still participate.
"And then I won it! It was incredible. I'm working on my second book already and will be opening my restaurant in Sydney (Australia) in April. "
His book Two Asian Kitchens, which is also available locally, has been a runaway success and the second book should hit shelves worldwide at the end of next year.
