Mischievous Marian loved every moment of her Survivor experience

Cape Town - Mischievous master-manipulator Marian de Vos and her Survivor partner-in-crime Shane Hattingh ran the show for 10 episodes of M-Net’s Survivor: South Africa: Champions, but their sneaky moves misfired this week and sent Marian, 25, packing after a tumultuous Tribal Council.

After Shane surprised Marian by giving her the Hidden Immunity Idol at Tribal Council, Marian - who suspected that Shane was in grave danger - decided to go with her gut and rather play the Idol for her buddy. She was right: Shane did receive the most votes, four in total – but they were all voided, thanks to her generosity.

Unfortunately the votes that were not for Shane delivered the first tie of the season – three votes each for Graham and Marian. Marian had hoped that saving Shane would send Graham home, but it wasn’t to be. The tribe had to go to the ballot again and when the votes were read, Marian became the first member of merge tribe Juara to be eliminated - and the first member of the jury that will choose the Ultimate Survivor in the end.

We asked Marian 5 quick questions after Sunday night’s episode:

What was your strategy going into the game?

I knew right from the start that I had to align myself with a strong main player. I needed an alpha male that I could get on my side. I also decided that I was going to play the game. The Marian on Survivor isn’t the same as the Marian in real life. It’s just a game and I played it hard. I really think I should have made it to the end. I was surprised by the vote. I didn’t think it was my time to go. Although I’m really not bummed by the fact that I used the idol to save Shane.

What was one of your most memorable moments on Survivor?

That very first moment when I was the first to jump into the ocean. Usually I don’t like swimming and I’m always worried about my hair. But not at that moment. None of that mattered. I just wanted to get into the game and start it all.

What was your biggest challenge on the island?

Physically I wasn’t the strongest and that was my biggest challenge. I sucked at challenges and was a weak player physically. That’s why I had to play a strategic mental and social game.

Who do you think should win?

I’m going to be biased and say Shane.

Would you ever do it again?

In a heartbeat. Absolutely. I loved every single moment of it. Living without a phone for 27 days was very liberating. It felt like a bit of a holiday. I would do 10 more seasons if they asked me.
