Naked newsreaders cause stir

Johannesburg - TV channel e.tv' s new naked newsreaders "is disgusting, put women to shame, falls in bad taste and is evidence of the world's moral decay".

This is how Beeld readers expressed their anger about the naked newsreaders who appear on the international news programme NakedNews.

Some readers even asked on Beeld's Facebook page whether it's a late April fool's joke.

NakedNews describes itself as "the programme with nothing to hide".

The programme has made waves worldwide because of the female newsreaders who slowly get rid of their clothes while reading the daily news. It began as an Internet subscription service, but has since become very popular and is now also available in South Africa.

Actuality prgramme

According to e.tv spokesperson Vasili Vass, the site nakednews.co.za has bought the rights to broadcast news on a Friday after the 22:00 movie. The programme continues into the early hours of Saturday.

"Art, entertainment, film news, food and exercise are some of the topics that the programme covers," Vass said on Tuesday.

"The programme has been scheduled for the next 11 Fridays. It has an 18N-rating and no sex scenes will be displayed."

Vass also encourages parents to be actively involved in their children's television viewing.

According to Vass it is an actuality programme where the "presenters strip completely, but some parts appear fuzzy".

The ongoing scheduling of the programme will depend on public opinion, Vass said.
