No porn on demand - MultiChoice

Johannesburg - There will be no porn on demand from DStv BoxOffice, says MultiChoice about its newly-launched video-on-demand (VOD) service that makes movies available for rental for 48 hours at R25 per movie.

MultiChoice plans to make 150 blockbuster movies available on DStv BoxOffice over the course of a year before it appears on normal pay television channels like M-Net, but the list won't include any pornographic titles like what is found on the VOD system of hotel rooms that runs a selection of adult movies in a similar type on-demand service.

DStv BoxOffice will initially only be available to DStv Premium subscribers who have a PVR decoder who will be able to use the service to watch either the standard definition (SD) or high definition (HD) version of a movie, although MultiChoice says DStv BoxOffice will be extended later to a wider range of subscribers.

DStv BoxOffice starts with 15 movies because all 15 are downloaded to a separate space – and encrypted – on PVR hard drives and the storage that's available. Subscribers need to register for a DStv BoxOffice account, then have their payment transaction verified via SMS, after which they will be able to watch their purchased movies immediately.

On standby

Since the PVR requires time to download titles and will do so when it's not in heavy use, MultiChoice recommends that subscribers leave their PVR on or in standby mode when not in use and not switch it off at night. (DStv BoxOffice won't affect PVR recording capacity, movies are downloaded to another ''section'' of the internal hard drive that wasn't operational before.)

To access DStv BoxOffice, DStv Premium subscribers have to push the green button on the DStv remote control and can follow the prompt screens. Once a movie has been ''paid'' for, a subscriber will be able to watch it as many times as they wish for a period of 48 hours.

As an introductory offer, MultiChoice will allow subscribers to watch their first movie on the DStv BoxOffice service for free. All movies also have free trailers that can be watched, similar to the VOD system found in hotels. Once a movie has expired, for instance after a period of about two weeks during which it will be available for rent, the movie won't be available again to rent through DStv BoxOffice again.

Parental lock

The same parental PIN code that is used on DStv and the same age restriction level will work on DStv BoxOffice as well. If anything is blocked with a PG13 rating for instance on your normal DStv subscription, the same PIN and same level of parental block is going to be active on DStv BoxOffice.
