Oprah funds new school in Zim

Cape Town – Oprah Winfrey is once again funding education in Africa by giving R10.3m of her own money to build a school in Zimbabwe.

On Friday's episode in the US – the 4th last episode of the 25th and final "farewell season" of The Oprah Winfrey Show, Winfrey featured the biggest life lessons from her most memorable guests over the years.

The queen of talk invited her "favourite guest of all time", Dr Tererai Trent, back on the show because of her inspirational life story.

Trent, originally from an impoverished village in Zimbabwe, managed to educate herself and attain her doctorate even after she was denied education as a child as married off at the age of 11.

Trent told Winfrey that she was selling T-shirts to raise money to repair a dilapidated school in Zimbabwe. Trent also relayed that she wants to return to rural Zimbabwe to try and help provide education for children and girls, who, like her, are denied the opportunity.

Surprise

Winfrey surprised a shocked Trent by saying, "We are going to build a school together!

"I had been so moved by your story. Your story is at the core of what I believe is possible for a human life here on Earth and for that reason I'm going to help you rebuild your school," said Winfrey.

"I'm donating $1.5m (R10.3m). That's the least I could do for you."

Having struggled over the past four years with her private girls' school that's been engulfed in public scandals, Winfrey offered Trent words of encouragement, saying "I want you to have hope doing it, because I know it's hard. It's about more than bricks and mortar."

Winfrey opened her private school, The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, in South Africa in 2007 and will visit the school again when the first class matriculates later this year.

Save the Children

"I've asked the organisation Save the Children to help us with this," said Winfrey. "In just a few months construction is going to begin on the primary school campus there in Zimbabwe which will educate nearly a thousand children from your village. Save the Children is also going to spend three years working with teachers and parents in the area to improve literacy and basic education, so ultimately 4 000 children will have a better education. We are going to build a school together – and it is achievable!"

Trent was Winfrey's final guest before a studio audience at Chicago's Harpo Studios. The celeb-studded two-part "Surprise Oprah! A Farewell Spectacular" will be broadcast on May 23 and 24.

On Wednesday US audiences will see the final episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show that will have no studio audience. Details about the final show are scarce.

The Oprah Winfrey Show airs on SABC 3 weekdays at 17:30.
