Cape Town – Sex sites are starting to launch video-on-demand (VOD) services with PornHub announcing that it’s starting a subscription service in the vein of Netflix to try and beat off competition.
PornHub Premium will cost $9.99 per month offering pornography in high definition (HD) and the end of jerky video with faster playback.
"Users will benefit from enhanced access to all of the content they already enjoy on PornHub – with improved streaming quality," says PornHub president Corey Price in a statement.
The site now wants to become the "Netflix of online pornography".
"We’re looking to take the crown as the 'Netflix of porn' and with the colossal amount of content we’ll be providing – and adding tonnes more daily – we’re confident our fan base will totally embrace this product and reinforce our position as the top provider of on-demand adult video."
PornHub Premium will be available on mobile, tablet, and desktop to offer “maximum comfort in consumption,” says the company.
The firm said that the billing process for PornHub Premium will be "secure and discreet".
MTN FrontRow drops price
Meanwhile, while Times Media Group’s VIDI VOD service is now looking for local content from South African producers, MTN which has struggled to make inroads with its own VOD service, FrontRow, is announcing that it’s dropping prices.
The FrontRow price decrease comes after Altron threw in the towel with its flopped Altech Node VOD offering which was a commercial failure.
MTN is dramatically decreasing the monthly subscription fee of FrontRow, from R179 to R119.
The price of the FrontRow Premiere transactional video-on-demand service remains unchanged at R27 or R15 per individual movie rental, depending on whether it’s a new release or a library title.
