SABC to spend thousands on research

Cape Town – The SABC is getting ready to spend thousands of rands on what is most likely an open secret: The broadcaster wants to know what people really think of the SABC.

The broadcaster, embroiled in allegations of corruption, stunning losses, constant executive turnover and cutbacks on local content, now wants to do what it calls "stakeholder perception research".

Stakeholders include sponsors, advertisers, the production community, the media and press, and viewers obliged to pay an annual SABC TV license.

The public broadcaster has just issued a request for proposals for stakeholder perception research which will likely cost the SABC thousands, and potential bidders have until November 18 to apply.

New appointment

Meanwhile the SABC's controversial executive, Justice Ndaba, who was the head of strategic services is quietly gone, with the SABC planning to replace him with the controversial Sipho Sithole who was the head of strategic services until February 2010.

The SABC didn't respond to Channel24's enquiries about the imminent appointment of Sithole.

Sithole served as the head of strategic services and risk management at the SABC while he was still listed as a director of Native Rhythm Records which he formed in 2005 – a private business interest.

The SABC said that there wasn't a conflict of interest with Sithole being listed as a director and having an executive role at the SABC.

In 2009 the SABC's trade union also questioned other payments of millions of rands made to Sithole. The SABC asked Sithole to leave the SABC in early 2010 and he resigned two months before his contract was set to expire in April 2010.

Why an insatiable appetite to spend money needlessly. By the way why do we pay TV licences to SABC when i dont ever switch into their channels. I exclusively watch DSTV. I atually called SABC and asked that they block their channels from my TV's and they refused. They are a strange bunch, whether you pay or not, you are always on air by force. hahahaha

Horrific waste of my time. I switch in on, throw up a little in my mouth, switch it off and go do something constructive instead. 99% plankton. Do you honestly think re-runs from the 80's are going to go unnoticed?

Never ceases to amaze me how they can find more ridiculous things to waste their money on. Here's what we think: YOU SUCK! Too many AD's, too few shows, too much news, too many languages. Too many infomercials / cellphone subscription service ad's, too many insurance ad's. Content is outdated by decades. I'm sure others can add to this list because I stopped watching SABC over a year ago and my life is better for it.

what a waste of money. I think of much better ways of spending my license fees.

New SABC Executive thug has buddy with research company. Hey my buddy. You help me and I will help you. You do not need research to know that none of the people that watch SABC have a TV liscense, and all the people that have a t.v. licence do not watch S.A.B.C. Secondly ,none of the people selecting programmes know what they are doing and overpay. From what I hear it is not a very nice corporation for minority groups to work at even though they are the only ones who know what to do.Look after the good staff as you do not have many left. The rest do not care and the government keeps bailing out its buddies . Corruption is done at the top and blamed on the middle. You do not need research when the executive is the problem . You need new executive and get rid of all the useless leeches.look after the good professional staff.

SABC don`t have much to do. This is a very small list of what’s not needed on TV .Soapies, Too damn much soap is making me sick cause my wife spends more less time with me.2-Repeat a movie once and burn after use-3-get rid of the adds, it makes me forget what I’m watching. And last. Stop asking us to complain if you are playing too much sex on TV ,cause you are.

If they can send tv licence reminders by email then they can send a questionnaire by email. I see most of what people want/don't want has already been answered by other readers.

The SABC can start by doing away with such rubbish programs as "Music Lounge" on TV1. Think about how much time and energy (electricity) that program wastes, all so a few fans can "jive".What about an educational-orientated program to take it's place? Jiving with sunglasses on doesn't create work or opportunities for the youth,it just puts money in the producer's pocket.Think of all the transmitter-electricity already wasted on that show,it goes on for hours and hours and hours on TV1 in the early am.

  • Freddie - 2011-11-03 13:57

I will save you money, no survey required... You Suck!! At everything.

  • pius.mlomo - 2011-11-03 15:10

The SABC is run by morons. SABC1 is the leading of them (channels) all. The repeat of everything they play. During the day they repeat Selimathunzi, Umuzi Wezinsizwa, Sgudi Snaysi which is all booboo. They don't show sport on time during the weekdays. How can you wait to watch the game that you are already aware of. They a bunch of fools like Juju. Go to hell SABC. Rather call it SAB. Your service is up to SHEET

  • Jonathon - 2011-11-03 16:00

I don't know when last I watched a show on SABC. Thank the Lord for DSTV... The pile of boring crap they show on SABC 1,2 and 3 is endless. To think I had to endure it for so many years.
