Cape Town – The Channel24 kitchen was buzzing with excitement on Wednesday morning when two superpowers collided over a delicious chocolate cake.
Anne Hirsch, presenter on Great SA Bake Off, and Herman Lensing, chef and food editor at Sarie magazine, fooled around behind the kitchen counter to the delight of our staff.
Great SA Bake Off kicks off on 6 October on BBC Lifestyle (DStv channel 174) and Herman’s latest cookbook, In My Kitchen, is already available on shelves nationwide.
We decided to have a quick chat with each of the creative masterminds and then played a devilishly, delightful game of Yummy or Gross!
Anne chats about Great SA Bake Off:
You’re a presenter on the Great SA Bake Off, what valuable baking tips have you picked up?I was taught that I should probably not be allowed to bake. I thought I couldn’t bake before the Great SA Bake Off and now it is established that I most definitely can’t bake. You realise how bad you are in comparison to real bakers. Also a top tip (pauses dramatically), read the recipe. Thank you Herman! If you were a cake what type would you be and why?I would be a melktert because I am very traditional in my ways and I am available everywhere in South Africa. I’m easy, not like that, but you can find me everywhere. Especially on BBC Lifestyle on 6 October at 20:00!
What’s the yummiest thing you’ve ever eaten?
Herman se ouma se chocolate cake! It’s delicious! I eat with my eyes!Who do you think is the sexiest chef in the world?Well apart from Herman over here, uhm. No I’m going to have to go with Herman. On his book cover you’ll see there is three of him, so you can have a threesome with Herman. How’s Angie doing? She’s well, she’s doing excellent. We haven’t been in touch for a while I’m looking forward to touching base with her. We’re faceTiming this afternoon. I’m really excited about that. I unfortunately couldn’t meet up with her while she was in South Africa because I was working on the show. But she understands and she also does things.
Herman shares secrets about his new cookbook:
Who is the most important person you’ve ever cooked for?
Anne Hirsch! Other people have asked me to cook for them but I’ve kept declining because Anne Hirsch is the only one I want to cook for!
What is your favourite dish in the book?
I like all of the dishes, but if I had to choose one I would go with my ouma’s chocolate cake.
What is your favourite ingredient to work with?
Anne Hirsch. She’s the best ingredient, but I also like the top 10 ingredients I’ve listed in my cookbook.
What is your favourite meal to make at home?
I like to keep it simple. I like to make risotto or to cook things in the oven. Anything with basic ingredients and lots of wine. And Anne Hirsch as a side-dish.
What is your top tip when working in the kitchen?
Enjoy it! Don’t let anyone’s bad comments ruin it for you. Just keep it simple and enjoy it.
We shouted out a food dish and they had to decide: YUMMY or GROSS!
It's our favourite little game to play and Anne and Herman had some great facial expressions to our strange combos. Check it out.
