Samsung launches global reality show

Cape Town – South Africans can now enter for a new global reality show from Samsung entitled SOS Island: Survival of the Smartest, which the electronics company plans to stream online.

SOS Island will broadcast on YouTube and Facebook from 30 September to 31 November.

Viewers get to vote for the 8 contestants in the show which will be shot and live-streamed from the remote SOS Island in the Caribbean and the winner who can walk away with a private island experience worth $100 000 will be announced on 9 December.

Since Samsung is running this reality video production, contestants will have to use the mobile maker’s smartphones and cameras to demonstrate its photographic capabilities.

Contestants will have to compete on the tropical island in unique and creative challenges and need to be at least 18.

'A game changer'

The presenter is Les Stroud, an international survival expert who has appeared in the Discovery series Survivorman and who’ve produced shows for various TV channels.

"I’m seeking 16 adventurous people from around the world to come to Puerto Rico and learn how to survive in the wild," says Stroud in a video on the show’s homepage, inviting people from around the world to enter.

"After one week of survival training, I’ll choose just eight. Whoever makes the cut, will be marooned on a deserted island for two weeks. You’ll compete in challenges designed for you by me, with streamed daily experiences to the world, live. Viewers will have a chance to vote for their favourite cast away.

"People crave new entertainment experiences and this series is sure to deliver, while tapping into the social media realm in an unprecedented way," says producer Craig Borders in a statement, the producer and director behind TV series such as The Mole, Laguna Beach and Ink Master. "This interactive, instant gratification entertainment model is a game changer," he says.

People have until 2 September to enter at www.sos-island.com or on their Facebook page.
