Scientologists plan Hollywood TV studio

2012-07-12 19:13
Los Angeles - The Church of Scientology, the religion whose followers include actors Tom Cruise and John Travolta, plans to start a religious broadcasting centre to promote its teachings over TV, radio and the internet.

The centre, located near the church's West Coast headquarters in Hollywood, would occupy the nearly five-acre studio property the church bought last year from Los Angeles public TV station KCET for $42m.

The station would elevate the public profile of a religion that has mostly relied on pamphlets and books by its founder, L Ron Hubbard, to proselytise for new members.

"The church plans to establish a central media hub for our growing world network of churches and to move into the production of religious television and radio broadcasting," said Karin Pouw, a spokesperson for Church of Scientology International.

She said there is no timetable for when operations would begin.

Scientology TV could be similar to Pat Robertson's Christian Broadcasting Network or the Trinity Broadcast Network.

Trinity creates Christian programming at a production centre in Irving, Texas, and airs it on TV stations and cable channels, said Rick Ross, whose non-profit Rick A Ross Institute in Trenton, New Jersey, maintains an online archive of data on cults and controversial movements.

"Hollywood is a major hub for creative talent and some of them are Scientologists," said Ross. "They'd have a lot of talented folks who could produce shows and stars like Tom Cruise who would appear on them."

Former members of the 60-year-old church accuse it of being a cult and have alleged that it abuses members and separates parents from children, among other things. The church denies such accusations.

The celebrity of controversial members like Cruise and Travolta is a double-edged sword for the church, Rapping said.

Cruise is one of the world's biggest movie stars, but his divorce from actress Katie Holmes has fuelled speculation that the couple disagreed on raising their 6-year-old daughter, Suri, as a Scientologist and sparked a flurry of news coverage about the church.

John Travolta was recently sued for libel by a Los Angeles man who wrote a book about his alleged homosexual encounters with the Saturday Night Fever and Pulp Fiction  star.

The Hollywood studio would complement the church's existing production facility, Golden Era Productions, near Hemet, California, which produces DVDs and "other audiovisual materials that comprise a large part of the Church's religious and educational materials", Pouw said.

    They already have Looneytoons!

      lizelle.grobbelaarvanzyl - 2012-07-12 20:21

Good one! If it wasn't for copyright infringement, that's what they would have been!

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-07-12 21:12

The Church of Scientology is 'no' religion !! Every businessman in the world, should on his desk, have a statue of the founder of this 'church' Ron Hubbard. Because this man was a 'genius" Ron had a company selling crappy self-help books. And instead of making this company a 'Limited' or a Pty (Ltd) , or a CC, he made it a "church" and through this 'master stroke' he saved his business, in the next 60 years, hundreds of millions of Dollars, if not Billions..............as in the USA, and in most other countries in the world, a church (religion) does NOT PAY TAXES !!!!!!! Unbelievable clever !!!!! So, this new Hollywood studio will be 'unique' , as it will be the only studio in Hollywood, which will pay NO taxes !!!!!

      zaatheist - 2012-07-13 04:29

@Anthony "The Church of Scientology is 'no' religion !!" So what makes it different from any of the other religions? All of them are invented: made up nonsense to exercise control over gullible people so as to make it easy to extract money from them.

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-07-13 07:20

Zaatheist, The point I try to make is that this 'church' is in reality a business. there is no 'God' to pray to. One actually p(r)ays to the likes of John Travolta and Tom Cruise !! I agree with you, that all religions are CONS !! And the Roman Catholic Church being the most dispicable organisation in the world, the Scientoogy Church is most certainly the most dangerous organisation in the world. Not for no reason, they have been banned outright in certain countries !!!

      zaatheist - 2012-07-13 07:26

      AnthonyfromAfrica Agreed

Their made up religion is no more ridiculous that all the other made up religions. Why is belief in Xenu more ludicrous than belief in any of the Abrahamic or Hindu gods?

      squeegee.pilot - 2012-07-12 21:38

Go play in the traffic, boring little troll.

      zaatheist - 2012-07-13 05:23

squeegee.pilot Anyone who exposes your particular superstitions, belief in the paranormal and an imaginary sky fairy is a troll, heh? And is that nice to call a complete stranger a troll: coming from a god fearing Christian boy? Jesus must be so proud of your expression of Christian love. "But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, 'Raca,' is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell." - NIV 1984. Matthew 5:22: Better get down on your knees squeegee and ask for forgiveness otherwise you are not going to be going to happy LaLa land when you die.

      Cassandra Eileen Olivier - 2012-07-12 21:37

Dawn people use religion as an excuse to go to war and Tom Cruise belongs to a cult not to any religion

      zaatheist - 2012-07-13 04:33

If they need a TV station, does this mean that Tom and others at his level do not have telepathic powers and the ability to be in absolute control of their environment?

      phil.losopher.3 - 2012-07-12 22:04

Hahaha. So true. Just like all the God's that needs money. Rulers of the universe but somehow they always need money.

It's amazing how some people go through life discouraging belief in God, Jesus Christ, The Bible, Quran etc, then on their death bed they suddenly start praying!!! If u don't believe in the Lord, it's ok, live your life!! It is very wrong to make people that do, feel stupid by quoting stories/ verses in the bible (in part) and trying to use that to ridicule religion. If anything, religion brings people together, fear of the Lord definitely urges one to try and do the right thing!! It is very easy to murder a person and get away with it but fear of the Lord always draws u back (to the believers). There is a lot of good that comes out of religion and faith. Do not be separated from your Lord because of these negative comments, they are the first to dump u when things get tough!!! I know u are going to come back with your wise comments again, but I'm secure enough in my faith and religion not to be offended by what u say. All I ask is u don't belittle us because of our beliefs which we are entitled. Please note I have insulted u, and I would expect the same respect!!!
