Cape Town - Falling Skies, the brand new TV show from Steven Spielberg, will be launched in 75 countries simultaneously in July.
The highly-anticipated new series about an alien invasion on modern-day Earth will air in South Africa on TopTV's Fox Entertainment (180).
Falling Skies is a drama starring ER's Noah Wyle as a dad who leads a group of survivors whilst looking for his younger son who's been captured and "altered" by aliens.
The first season, consisting of 10 episodes, will start in South Africa on Monday July 4 at 20:15.
Global roll-out
Turner Broadcasting System International announced that South Africa will be one of more than 75 countries that will be seeing Falling Skies simultaneously including Germany, Brazil, Mexico, Spain, Canada, South Korea and Britain.
Falling Skies starts in America on the TNT channel on June 19 after which the show will have a global roll-out and South Africa will be just three episodes behind the US. The show is produced by Dreamworks Television.
"The launch of Falling Skies promises to be a global television event," says Steven Koonin, president of Turner Entertainment Networks. "We're excited that people around the world will be able to experience this great new series."
Second win
Falling Skies is the second major programming coup for pay TV operator TopTV after Fox International Channels (FIC), which runs Fox Entertainment on TopTV, also secured and aired the first season of the popular zombie drama The Walking Dead in November 2010.
"We are thrilled to have finalised the first-run pay television rights for Falling Skies," says Thandi Davids, the regional director for Africa for FIC. "The negotiations were tough and we are really pleased that we have managed to secure the rights for viewers in South Africa for TopTV.
"Given the great storyline, the association with Steven Spielberg and a stellar cast, we expect this series to be huge, both globally and locally," she says.
