Johannesburg - Jeannie D, Jeremy and Jacqui Mansfield, Mel Bala and other local celebs took to the kitchen to prepare the meals at the launch event for Come Dine With Me SA, held at The Eatery in Johannesburg on Tuesday.
Come Dine With Me SA, a local version of the popular British show, is a ten-part series following four strangers each episode hosting dinner parties for one another, after which they are scored.
The launch event saw the celebs serve up two different menus between four tables of guests.
Generations actor Zolisa Xaluva whipped up a prawn and tomato cocktail for starters while 5FM's Poppy Ntshongwana delivered vegan brownies with Orley Whip to her tables. Jeremy and Jacqui Mansfield served duck bobotie, an interesting twist on a traditional South African favourite.
Top Billing's Jeannie D served her tables strawberry and lemon sorbet for dessert that turned out to be a hit with all the tables.
Xaluva scored the highest points at his tables for his starter.
Interesting characters
Also in attendance at the launch was Kee-Leen Irvine, Managing Director of Rapid Blue, the production company responsible for the series. Speaking of the auditions for the shows, she said: "We could have used 90% of the people we auditioned; such wonderful characters."
Irvine was impressed with the public's interest in auditioning for the show, saying they received about 2 000 applications in total.
Logistics
Each contestant receives R3 000 to host the dinner party: R1 500 in Pick n Pay vouchers (Pick n Pay is sponsoring the show) and R1 500 in cash.
All the dinner parties were filmed in the hosts' homes.
The first episode is set in Johannesburg and airs on BBC Entertainment (DStv channel 120) on Wednesday October 12 at 21:00.
