Cape Town – Lifetime’s hot new drama UnREAL premieres tonight. Since its debut in the US it has had audiences and critics buzzing.
Here's what you need to know about the show:
What it’s about:
The ten episode, one-hour provocative drama, gives a fictitious behind-the-scenes glimpse into the chaos surrounding the production of a TV dating competition programme. It is based on a 2013 award winning short film, Sequin Raze.
Set against the backdrop of the fictional hit dating competition show Everlasting, UnREAL is led by flawed heroine Rachel Goldberg (Shiri Appleby), a young producer whose sole job is to manipulate her relationships with, and among, the contestants to get the vital dramatic and outrageous footage that the programme’s dispassionate executive producer, Quinn King (Constance Zimmer), demands. What ensues is an eye-opening take on the outrageous world of unscripted television, where being a contestant can be vicious and being a producer is a whole other reality.
Who stars in it?
The lead roles are filled by Shiri Appleby (Girls, Chicago Fire) and Constance Zimmer (House of Cards, The Newsroom, Grey's Anatomy).
Other stars include: Craig Bierko as Everlasting’s eccentric creator, Chet, and Freddie Stroma (Pitch Perfect) as the dating show’s handsome and intelligent suitor, Adam Cromwell. Josh Kelly (One Life to Live), Siobhan Williams (Black Box), Nathalie Kelley (The Fast and the Furious), Johanna Braddy (Shameless), Breeda Wool (Betas) and Ashley Scott (Jericho) and Arielle Kebbel (The Vampire Diaries) make up the rest of the cast.
