We had a chat with Nev from MTV’s Catfish and invited him to South Africa

Cape Town – Nev Schulman is already a fan of South Africa. He actually paid us a visit at the end of last year and we didn’t even know about it.

Nev, for those that don’t know, is the star of the popular MTV show, Catfish.

On the internet a "catfish" is a person who creates fake personal profiles on social media sites. Sometimes they do it for fun, sometimes there is a much darker reason behind it.

Nev and his hot grey-haired sidekick, Max Joseph, have made it their job to expose and track down catfishes across America all whilst filming it for our viewing pleasure.

The TV show is a spin-off from Nev’s docu-film with the same title which followed his very own journey of exposing a catfish that had him believing he had found the love of his life.

We got to chat with Nev about season 3 of the show which premiered in America on Wednesday.

Channel24: The new season is rumoured to be a bit darker and more serious. Is that true?

Nev: Yes. It definitely has a darker, more serious feel to it. Not only was most of the season shot during the winter, but the type of stories we did were much more serious. We entered situations we definitely were not prepared for.

C24: What else will be different in this season compared to the previous ones?

N: Max and I also used different techniques to track down the catfish this time around. In some cases we even split up and went in different directions. A few times we even showed up unannounced. In one episode we were joined by a celebrity who helped us with the investigation. This time we went after the bigger fish!

C24: Is there an episode in the new season that stands out for you?

N: Yes. There is this one episode which features a hip-hop artist. He scammed a lot of people and caused a lot of drama. It’s a complicated story and will definitely be worth the watch.

C24: Will there be another season after this?

N: We don’t know yet. Fingers crossed. I would like to shoot season 4 in the UK.

C24: How about shooting season 5 in South Africa?

N: You know that’s actually not a bad idea at all. I visited South Africa at the end of last year and absolutely loved it. I would love to do a season there.

C24: What else are you keeping yourself busy with?

N: I’m working on another show with MTV and I also have a book coming out soon called In Real Life. I’m very excited about it all. It all sometimes feels so unreal to me. Like how did I even end up here? How did this all happen? I never expected all of this. It’s amazing.
I wrote a book. It's called 'In Real Life'. This is what it looks like. Hope you like it. #ThrowBookThursday #IRLbook pic.twitter.com/CzTedGwb86
The third season kicks off in SA on 15 May on MTV (DStv channel 130) at 20:30.
