We had a quickie with Troye Sivan and Caspar Lee from the new Spud movie

Cape Town – The much anticipated third installment of the pop culture hit Spud hits South African cinemas later this month.

In Spud 3 Learning to Fly the crazy 8 are back.

This time around John ‘Spud’ Milton deals with his embarrassing parents, constantly wrestle with his crazy mates and deals with all the pitfalls of that uncomfortable adolescent stage.

The film stars international YouTube sensations Troye Sivan and Casper Lee.

We got to chat with these rising stars who both have South African ties!

Troye filled us in about the new movie and living in the spotlight!

Channel24:
What will Spud and the rest of the Crazy 8 get up to this time?

Troye:
This film is such a big moment for Spud and the Crazy 8. Spud receives his army call up papers, and the school is threatening to take his scholarship away if he doesn’t behave. He’s also pretty keen to lose the ‘Big V’ with Mermaid, but she tells him she’s saving herself for marriage, and at some point gets with a suspiciously old looking man from her church. It’s full of everything we’ve grown to love about the Spud movies, tension, girls, plenty of mischief, and more laughs than any of the other movies so far.

@Caspar_Lee and I are very religious.

Channel24:
How has Spud grown since the last film?

Troye:
I think Spud’s maturity and confidence has grown so much since the last film - he’s less of a weasel than ever, which was nice for me to play.

Channel24:
Have the lines ever blurred between Spud and Troye?

Troye:
Not really. We’re very different in most ways - the only line that could’ve been blurred is the boys calling each other our character names off of set.

Channel24:
Do you have any memorable moments working alongside John Cleese?

Troye:
Plenty! I love working with John so much, and learn so much from him every time. Most memorable are probably our dinners where we just catch up on life n things. He gives great advice!

Another one from the other night! #Spud2

Channel24:

You have so many things going for you now how do you maintain the balance and stay grounded?

Troye:
Thanks so much for thinking I do! (Laughs) I think having a really good family, and team around me helps. I’ve always got my mom’s voice in my head telling me she’ll smack me if I get big headed.

South African bred Youtube sensation Caspar makes his acting debut in Spud 3.

Channel24:
You’re new to the cast, how did you fit in?

Caspar:
At first I felt like an outcast being new and all, as the cast had already formed relationships through the past two films, but that didn’t last long- everyone was really welcoming and provided guidance wherever they could. By the second week of filming I felt like a member of the Spud family.

Channel24:
How would you describe Garlic’s character?

Caspar:
Garlic is a new classmate from Malawi. He is new to the "crazy 8". I would describe him as self-obsessed and quite eccentric. He comes from a rich family and is used to being the centre of attention, he finds difficulty adjusting to his new school at first, as he is no longer the centre of attention. He goes from being a big fish in a small pond to being a small fish in a big pond.

Channel24:
You’re 20 now, what was it like being back at school and playing a teen?

Caspar:
Well, when we filmed I was still 19, so I didn’t find it that difficult, it was actually really fun. I am not that mature anyway.

The man watching me bowl happens to be John Cleese. #NoBiggy

Channel24:
How did you get the role of Garlic? Did you audition or did they discover you on YouTube?

Caspar:
The producer, Ross Garland discovered me on YouTube and thought I would be good for the part. I still had to audition though. They took a chance on me and I am very grateful.

Channel24:
What’s the inspiration for all your random funny YouTube videos?

Caspar:
I get inspiration through my friends and life experiences, if I think something is funny I will try to include it in my videos. I always have the objective to make good, funny and interesting content.
