Cape Town – The Strictly Come Dancing finale is just around the corner and we can’t wait to see who has the best moves!
Just missing a spot in the top 3, John Mametsa left with a humble heart and couldn’t feel more grateful for the experience.
What is a Channel24 quickie? It’s a spontaneous episode consisting of five frisky questions in which celebs and Channel24 have a brief frolic leaving all parties involved feeling satisfied and craving a cigarette.
We spoke to the former rugby player about his lifting trend, dropping Nombulelo and taking his wife dancing.
Channel24:
Did being a fit rugby player, help with working out dance routines in anyway?
John:
It certainly helped with regards to having long lasting energy and the stamina needed. But I was still so surprised that my fitness had to be taken to another level because I was using different muscles that I wouldn’t normally use.
Channel24:
What is your arm workout routine and how often do you work out?
John:
Well I’ve always had big arms, when I was still playing rugby it was easy.
It doesn’t take that much to work your arms out and because I was playing so much rugby it was easy to build muscle. I now have to just maintain them.
I’ve been gyming since I started playing rugby and after I stopped I just gym more. I work out 5 days a week.
Channel24:
Were you ever worried you would drop Nombulelo?
John:
In the beginning Nombulelo was very worried I would drop her. She isn’t used to doing lifts with her dance partner because he is built smaller than I am. So they never do things like that. But as time went on she started trusting me more and it was all about us working together as a team and trusting one another.
Channel24:
Did you ever drop her or have any other accidents during practices?
John:
There were never any bad accidents and she never touched the floor when I lifted her. There was once that I missed the mark but I made sure she didn’t fall.
Apart from a few bruises on her body, and the occasional black eye she gave me, we worked very well and there were no fatalities.
Channel24:
Where would you take your wife dancing?
John:
I struggled with ballroom dancing on the show. Nombulelo’s height played a role, she is a bit shorter and so when I danced with her I had to slouch. My wife is taller though so I would love to try ballroom dancing with her, every now and then just for fun.
Strictly SA is broadcast on SABC3 every Friday at 20:00 and the results show on Saturdays at 19:00 after the 18:30 news.
