Cape Town – The Idols Top 10 took the stage last night for their first performances.
And they held nothing back, it’s safe to say that the competition is in full swing.
The theme for this week was the 'Judges Choice' with Randall Abrahams, Gareth Cliff, Unathi Msengana, and Somizi Mhlongo each submitting songs for each contestant to choose from.
By the end of the show Somizi’s playlist turned out to be the favourite amongst the contestants.
There were some very good and not so good performances.
We rate the Top 10:
Elwira Standili
Elwira started off the show will the Mariah Carey ballad, Without You. There is no doubt that Elwira can sing but she does lack the stage presence. We hate to agree with Randall but she did look like she wasn’t enjoying the performance.
Our rating: 3/5
Karabo Mogane
Karabo performed the Macy Gray hit, I Try and boy did he blow us away! Is there anything he can’t sing? We cannot fault him: tone check, charisma check.
Our rating: 4/5
Amanda Antony
Welcome to the competition Amanda! What a transformation. Her performance proved to everyone (and us) that she deserves to be in the competition. And that it’s all about song choice, Jessie Ware’s, Say You Love Me put her back in the game.
Our rating: 3/5
Siphelele Ngcobo
Siphele has found his niche and he seems to be sticking to local songs. He choose Lira’s, Soul In Mind. It started out slow and the performance really didn’t pick up. It was an OK performance but he needed to do more to leave a lasting impression.
Our rating: 2/5
Dineo Moseki
Dineo choose Taylor Swift’s, Blank Space selected by Randall. While the judges were blown away by her performance we really weren’t convinced that this was the right song choice for her. There was a lil' something missing.
Our rating: 2/5
Rhema Varrie
Rhema (a quick moment of silence) has completely broken out of his shell! Taking on the King of Pop's, Man In The Mirror he delivered a first class performance that gave us goosies; he was near perfect. He has set the bar high for himself, we hope he can maintain this.
Our rating: 4/5
Lungisa Xhamela
Lungisa slowed things down this week. He choose the soulful ballad, I Can’t Make You Love Me. Technically his performance was good but it lacked the emotion this song needs.
Our rating: 2/5
Nadia Herbst
Nadia took on Rihanna’s number one hit, Take A Bow. While it was a good attempt however, she was flat and lacked the soul this song needs. Nadia might be in trouble this week.
Our rating: 1/5
Loyiso Gijana
Is this boy really 16?! Every time he takes to the stage we are blown away by his talent and skill. He added his own spin to Emile Sande’s, Next To You which showed off his versatility.
Our rating: 4/5
Mmatema Moremi
Mmatema closed off the show with an energetic performance of Tina Turner’s, River Deep Mountain High. It was a classic Mmatema performance that we’ve become accustomed to, nothing new here.
