Craig Lucas: It still doesn’t feel real

Cape Town – Two days after being crowned The Voice SA season 2 winner Craig Lucas' feet have yet to touch the ground.

During a telephone interview the singer revealed that his win has yet to sink in.

"I don’t think I have slept since Sunday. I have been so busy doing interviews that I haven’t really had a moment to sit down and reflect. When I talk about it, it feels like I am talking  about someone else," says Craig.

It’s hard to believe that before his blind audition the 24-year-old Capetonian had never performed in front of an audience.

He won over coach Kahn Morbee with his first note and also gained a fan following who have kept him out of the bottom three since the live rounds.

Not once during the competition did Craig think that he would win.

In fact he admits that when it was announced that he made the top 2 with Josh he was happy to take second place.

"When I made it to the top 2 with Josh - who is one of the most incredible singers I have heard - I thought there was no way I was going to win."

He continues: "I was even happy with second place – just being in the competition with all these amazing singers was such a big achievement for me – not once did I think that I would win."

'I JUST WANTED MY MOM'

About the moment that he was announced the winner Craig says it felt like a dream.

"In that moment I just wanted my mom because I didn't know what to do. I just sobbed because it was so overwhelming."

Craig's mom has been his number one cheerleader throughout the competition.

Having her there supporting him pushed him to do his best.

"My mom has never been outside of Cape Town and she's never been on a plane before The Voice. To be able to bring her down every week being my support structure was amazing," says Craig.

READY TO START HIS NEW MUSIC CAREER

With the competition done Craig is ready to start his new career full-steam ahead. He wants to take dance classes and improve his guitar and piano skills.

On Tuesday he will be meeting with Universal Music to discuss his upcoming album.

"I am really excited to meet with them and to discuss which direction would be best for me. I have written so many songs and I am keen to play it for them and get their input."

The Voice has been a big learning curve. The greatest lesson he has learned is to not be afraid to try new things.

"The Voice pushed me out of my comfort zone. Kahn has taught me to celebrate what makes me different and unique. It has given me so much confidence."

Craig is enjoying his amazing prize package. Asked if he has taken his car out for a spin, he chuckles saying he just parked it. He's not the best of drivers so he's a bit nervous to take it out just yet on the streets of Jozi.

When the dust has settled he wants to use some of his prize money to take a holiday.

"It's been a long, stressful couple of months. I plan to take my mom on a vacation, take a breather and savour it all," says Craig.
