Durban kicks off Idols SA 12 with 19 golden tickets!

Durban - Idols SA season 12 is in full swing!

Scores of singing hopefuls from KwaZulu-Natal descended on Durban’s Playhouse to audition for the popular singing competition this past weekend.

They came in their numbers to impress, but in the end 19 Golden Tickets were issued by judges Randall Abrahams, Unathi Msengana, Somizi Mhlongo and Gareth Cliff, proving just how tough it is to crack the nod in this Mzansi Magic singing reality show.

One contestant was so overwhelmed that she fainted. Social South Africa posted a picture of Gareth and Unathi carrying the contestant.

“We are not looking for perfection; we want contestants who are willing to learn and grow throughout the competition. With that said, we know there’s a lot of talent out there so we’re not going to waste time giving space to people who won’t stand a fighting chance come Theatre Week,” said Randall.

The gruelling elimination process saw judges come face-to-face with a myriad of personalities; from cute and affable, strong-willed and opinionated, to apologetic and anxious. There were good voices, mediocre voices and great Wooden Mic potentials.

According to Unathi, Durban was certainly a mixed bag of the talent. “Durban definitely got Season 12 auditions off to a fine start. Now we can’t wait to see what the rest of the regions have to offer," said an excited Unathi.

There are three more regional auditions to go. Pretoria is up this Saturday, 06 February at the State Theatre, then it’s off to Carnival City in Johannesburg on 28 February 2016, before rounding the tour off at Cape Town’s Grand West Entertainment World on 5 March 2016.

Entry is free and open to all South African citizens who are between 16 and 30 years old on the date of their first audition. Don’t forget to bring your ID document to the audition, and minors have to have written consent signed by a parent or guardian.
