Idols top 8: A shock elimination and great performances

Johannesburg – The Top 8 brought the heat last night.

At the beginning of the competition I wasn't quite sure about these contestants but week after week they are surprising me.

I am even going on a limb by saying that these are really some of the best singers we've had on the show in a long time.

Accompanied by last year’s winners of Clash of the Choirs, the Top 9 gave a killer opening performance.

The biggest lesson learnt from last night's shocking elimination is that if you don't vote for your favourite, they will be kicked out.

Valentine was without a doubt one of the best singers in the competition but her fans failed to put their money where their mouths are, ne.

Meanwhile Bevin's fans are doing the most to keep their boy in the competition. Look, if he was improving every week then by all means keep him in the competition. But he still sounds the same way he did when he auditioned: still singing off key, still sounding flat and out of his depth and still choosing songs that are too big for him. Shem, must be his cute face that's keeping him around.

Sidenote: Can the real Randall please stand up? Who is this neckerchief wearing nice guy? And Somizi, yoh! Someone had chillies, he was so spicy!

Here are my top 5 performances:

5. Nosihe

You might not like her but you have to give this lady props! After sitting there for almost two hours waiting to hear her fate she comes out and gives a noteworthy performance. Nosihe is getting better each week, and this is why people keep voting for her. Slay girl!

4. Keegan

Keegan showed his versatility this week; he took on a song in another language and he did well. It was a good choice in terms of getting votes and he performed it well too. I think Somizi was a bit too hard on him, if he had chosen a Brian Themba song like Somgaga suggested it would have been so predictable.

3. Thami

There is no denying that Thami's performance was a standout one. I just felt that it was a bit over the top showmanship wise. I can’t fault him on the singing (hence number 3) but there was just something about it that I wasn't totally feeling. In terms of singing he is one of the top contenders.

2. Noma

I am not even going to deny that Noma is one of my favourites. I totally loved this performance, yes there were some off keys and some voice breaks but that all added to the emotion of the song. It was a beautiful performance.

1. Terra

Terra's performance gave me chest pains. Perfect song choice, perfect pitch, perfect everything! There was a point during his performance that he sounded like the late great Michael Jackson.
