Cape Town - On Tuesday, SABC3’s night-time talk show Trending SA celebrated its maiden anniversary at Q-Studios in Johannesburg’s north-eastern suburb of Kew.

One could have mistaken the event for a Hollywood jamboree, given the way in which photographers lined up to snap pics of celebrities as they arrived at the venue.

The show has been a hit from the outset as its format covers topics that are trending on social media.

As part of Tuesday’s party, the usual live show was hosted by the regular panel: Pabi Moloi, Kuli Roberts, Nina Hastie and Shaka Sisulu.

Although the place was crowded, the presenters got things going and kept the vibe smoking.

The show has been well received and viewership has grown to 500 000 since it first aired.

Just as the guests were getting into the swing of the programme, the hosts announced that one of them would be leaving the show.

As the audience pondered this, Sisulu said: “It’s me.”

Celebrities spotted there included singer Candy Mokwena, actor Lesley Musina, radio host Masechaba Ndlovu, House DJ Mobi Dixon and former YoTV presenter Musa Mthombeni, who is a qualified doctor these days.

Champagne, cocktails and soft drinks were served, along with a variety of mouthwatering dishes.

Executive producer Thokozani Nkosi attributed the show’s success to the way in which it kept track of social media and popular issues of the day.

“Social media is a giant chat room in which varied views are shared on different matters, and there are quite a lot of entertaining posts, which we saw could make for great television,” he said.

He added that more than 230 episodes had been produced.

The featured guest on Tuesday’s show was hip-hop artist and former prisoner Molemo Maarohanye, better known as Jub Jub.

The drinks kept flowing as the night progressed, and the party-loving crowd showed off their dance moves to great beats.

It was no surprise when people called on friends and family to fetch them.

Kudos to them for doing the responsible thing.

Trending SA airs live on SABC3 on Monday and Tuesday nights from 21:30 to 22:00.
