kykNET to start new Afrikaans soap

Cape Town – kykNET, the Afrikaans language division of pay-TV broadcaster M-Net in Randburg, is set to start a brand-new Afrikaans TV soap for the kykNET & Kie (DStv 145) channel on MultiChoice's DStv satellite pay-TV platform aimed specifically at South Africa's coloured community of TV viewers.

South African television has not seen a dramatic television production where the story revolved specifically around, and the characters portrayed, the coloured community of the country since Die Allemans which ran in 1991 on TV1 (the former SABC2) on the public broadcaster and revolved around the middle class Allemans family.

Even back then Die Allemans director Pieter Grobbelaar said that the coloured community has long been neglected in terms of dedicated television content.

Now kykNET is looking for proposals for a brand-new soap specifically targeting this viewing audience.

kykNET wants a soap for kykNET & Kie for the coloured community of South Africa by the coloured community "story ideas with a strong focus on entertainment, linking in with the audience and which will grow our viewership figures".

kykNET wants to produce at least 208 half hour episodes of this new soap.

Although the new soap will be for the coloured community, the story and characters should still be broad enough so that all the Afrikaans TV channels could make use of it.

kykNET wants "unmissable television" and a new TV soap viewers would return to on a daily basis.

The soap should have a "long lifespan", not revolve around just one or two characters and kykNET wants family drama, romance, personal intrigue, but also a sense of community and belonging.
