Cape Town - Raphael Griffiths has become a force to be reckoned with in the entertainment industry.

The 27-year-old actor began his journey as a presenter on SABC2 youth programmes Q-base 28 and Music Moves Me, but he’s best known as Vusi Mukwevho on Muvhango.

Viewers have followed his character’s evolution over the years with interest.

Vusi made his first appearance as a spoilt, troublesome 16-year old teenager who relied on his mother Thandaza (played by actress Sindi Dlathu).

Now, Vusi is a father, much changed from the boy he once was.

DRUM caught up with Raphael to find out how he’s tackled this on-screen transition from boy to man.

How old were you when you started playing Vusi?

I had just turned 23 when I started playing the kid. I think he was about 16 at the time. It’s amazing what a little make-up can do.

How has playing Vusi challenged you?

It's been a very interesting 4 years and my acting skills have been tested. Although Vusi is just one guy, he’s someone’s son, grandson, friend and now father. That requires serious versatility and although I’m by no means saying I am doing well, it takes serious consideration and skill to play from different angles. The more I've grown with my craft the more my character has grown as well.

Which phase of Vusi’s life did you enjoy playing the most?

As much as I didn't know what I was doing I actually enjoyed playing the high school Vusi.

Which phase was the most challenging to play?

The most challenging is playing Vusi as a father.

Are there any similarities between you and Vusi?

I would say the only similarity is that we both love our mothers, grandmothers and little sisters dearly, except now Vusi just added a daughter to that list!
