The country’s comedians have been insulting each other big time as part of the requisite verbal thrust-and-parry that defines TV channel Comedy Central’s Roast Battle every Monday night.
City Press has played its part in keeping the humorists hard at work by getting them to insult everyone from US President Donald Trump to those involved in the ANC’s alleged election war room.
Ahead of the fifth episode tomorrow, we have made it the DA’s turn to get roasted, given this week’s allegations of a leadership battle in the Western Cape, fuelled by the resignation of provincial chair Patricia de Lille, who quit to focus on her role as mayor of Cape Town.
Comedian Gavin Kelly suggested sis’ Pat strike out on her own.
“Patricia de Lille should start her own party called WDA – Window Dressing Alliance,” he said.
“Bonginkosi Madikizela [De Lille’s deputy chairperson] will be replacing her. Good luck to white people on pronouncing that name.”
Ebenhaezer Dibakwane offered this barb:
“De Lille said she wanted to focus her energy on her duties as mayor and spread the success of the City of Cape Town. The townships will have to be strong, though.
"Following the resignation of their coloured figures, the DA and [ventriloquist] Conrad Koch are both in search of new puppets.”
Comedian Alyn Adams brought up this week’s other news story in his roast: the resignation of top public prosecutor Gerrie Nel to head up a private prosecutions team for Afrikaner civil society group AfriForum.
“I know Patricia de Lille started in the PAC [Pan Africanist Congress], then shifted to the ID [Independent Democrats] and then wound up in the DA, but there’s no truth in the rumour that she has resigned from the Western Cape leadership to pursue independent prosecutions with AfriForum,” he said.
Richelieu Beaunoir said the alleged DA leadership fight reminded him of “two hens fighting over the last helping of chicken feed in the enclosure.
The brown hen had to give up responsibility as the pen leader to keep her precious eggs warm,” he said.
Lihle Lindy presented this jibe: “Helen Zille, the former leader, and now Patricia de Lille, former mayor.
The DA has so many former members, no wonder it’s also the former National Party, AKA the ‘no blacks allowed unless they marry whites’ party.”
