Cape Town – Sad news for Chewing Gum fans Tracey and company won’t be returning for a third season.

The British comedy, which garnered worldwide acclaim after hitting Netflix in 2016, is written by and stars Michaela Coel.

Fader first reported the news on Monday with representatives for UK network Channel4 confirming the news.

In a statement the network said that there are currently no plans for a third season.

"Chewing Gum is a vibrant, hilarious, and unique comedy of which we are incredibly proud. Though there currently aren’t any plans for a 3rd series, we hope to work with the hugely talented Michaela Coel again soon," read the statement.

Coel then took to Twitter to thank fans for their support.

The sitcom centred on 24-year-old shop assistant Tracey Gordon (Coel), a restricted, religious virgin, who wants to have sex and learn more about the world.

The supporting cast included Danielle Isaie as her experienced bestie, her zealous preacher mom (Shola Adewusi) and her prudish sister (Susan Wokoma).

In 2016 it won the BAFTA for Best Female Performance In A Comedy Programme. Coel also won the BAFTA for Breakthrough Talent for her work on the show.

Earlier this year she revealed that she wrote every episode herself.

If you haven't seen the series yet it is available on Netflix.
