Second chef gets cut from Top Chef SA

Cape Town - Durbanite Kerwin Buckley’s Top Chef South Africa dreams came to an end on Tuesday when he was the second cheftestant eliminated from the fast-paced reality cooking show.

Kerwin, Head Chef St James on Venice Boutique Hotel, was asked to ‘pack his knives and leave the Top Chef SA kitchen’ after his fish dish in the Elimination Challenge didn’t deliver.

It was another tense-filled episode that saw the experienced chefs put under pressure from the get-go. They were asked by the judges to whip up a gourmet dish using an unlabelled tinned food such as beans, mackerel and guavas.

Cheftestant Sachin Gosai, who wowed with his snail pasta dish, emerged as the winner and gained the advantage of his own personal fridge and extra ingredients going into the Elimination Challenge.

In the Elimination Challenge, the judges; Neill Anthony, Lesego Semenya and Lorna Maseko were joined by guest judge Lucia Mthiyane, seasoned actress, singer, chef and entrepreneur.

In this week’s challenge the cheftestants were asked to cook a fresh fish dish in an hour and the type of fish they each got to cook was determined by a heart-stopping knife pull.

Hezron Louw, who landed in last week’s bottom 3 came out tops this week with his trout tacos showing off his flair for ‘street cuisine.’ He was joined at the top Annemarie Robertson and Ayabonga Gope.

The judges’ least favourite dishes included those by Kerwin, Paddy Khuele, Phillip Nel and Sachin (despite him having had an advantage going into the challenge). But ultimately it was Kerwin that was eliminated.

With just 12 cheftestants remaining catch all the action on SABC 3 every Tuesday evening at 20:00.
