Cape Town – FX has just released the first trailer for The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.
The second season of the Ryan Murphy anthology explores the murder of fashion designer Gianni Versace and his murderer Andrew Cunanan.
The series is based on the book by Maureen Orth and follows Andrew Cunanan (Darren Criss), a liar and conman. In April 1997 he went on a killing spree murdering four people. In July that year he shot and killed Versace (Edgar Ramirez) on the steps of his mansion. Days later Cunanan killed himself.
Other cast members include Penelope Cruz who will play Donatella Versace and Ricky Martin who will play Versace's long-time partner Antonio D'Amico.
The clip starts off with scenes of Versace and a passionate monologue by Donatella (Cruz): “Everything you see around us — this house, this company — was his life. I will not allow that man, that nobody, to kill my brother twice.”
It then travels back in time and focuses on Cunanan's life, his obsession with Versace and the assassination.
Cunanan can be heard saying: "This world is wasted on me. Yet this world also made you, Versace, into a star. You’re not better than me; we’re the same. The only difference is that you got lucky."
