We chat to SA's first Top Chef

Cape Town - Executive Chef at Burrata, Bocca & Open Door,  Annemarie Robertson was crowned South Africa’s first ever Top Chef in the finale on Tuesday.

After weeks of gruelling competition and beating 13 other contestants Annemarie walked away with the coveted title and R100 000 in prize money.

We chatted to the Top Chef of SA about her win, her future plans and cooking.

1. What have the past few hours been like since you’ve been revealed as the first winner of Top Chef SA?

It’s been quite busy. I have had a number of interviews and phone calls congratulating me, it’s been a bit crazy! It's such a fantastic experience I am very happy with the title. It's all been a bit overwhelming. 

2. What are you going to do with your Top Chef cash prize?

The money will go towards the business I am starting. I don’t have a clear vision just yet. I have my website set up and will be looking at doing some consulting and private dinners. And some of it will be used for a bit of travelling. 

3. Out of all the dishes you prepared on the show, which do you feel the most proud of?

The dish I am most proud of is the one I prepared in the first challenge - the tuna dish I also won that challenge. And my favourite challenge was the vegetarian dish.

4. What’s one piece of advice you wish you could have given yourself at the beginning of the competition?

To not overthink, if I could go back I would try to be a bit calm and to not overthink everything. 

5. What's something that happens behind-the-scenes that will surprise people about the show?

The fact that one episode took two days to film. I don’t think a lot of people know what actually goes into the production of the show and that the guys behind-the scenes work very hard. 

6. What's your most valuable cooking utensil?

My knife!

7. Did you learn any new cooking tips from being on the show?

That you can cook everything in a really big pot.

8. What's your favourite ingredient to cook with?

I have three that I never cook without: salt, lime and Italian parsley. 

9. What meal would you cook to impress a date?

I would do something simple - I enjoy very hearty meals, something that is slow cooked and not too fancy. 

10. What's next for you?

I really don't want to go back to working in a kitchen full time just yet. I would like to explore things like consulting and helping people set up restaurants. I also have a stand at a market at Groot Constantia which I do on weekends. I just want to have fun with food!
