Johannesburg - This week is the semi-final, the remaining four amateur bakers set their oven temperatures to piping hot, to secure a coveted spot in the final.
It’s all to play for as the signature bake starts the episode with a tricky French delight – a mille-feuille. Contestants must produce either a tray of six individual, or one large one with their own characteristic twist on a classic.
To make the heat rise even further in the Bake Off tent, the limited guidance for the technical bake recipe results in the bakers grasping to pull off a nostalgic mini chocolate marshmallow tea-time pie. As day one draws to a close and the judgement is done, the realisation dawns that there is just one bake left before they find out who makes it into the finals.
With the smell of victory now so close, the showstopper challenge becomes something of a disaster zone as one calamity follows after another. Bakers are tasked with creating a neatly layered two-tone chocolate mousse cake and the offerings, in theory at least, seem spectacular.
It’s a semi-final worthy of the name, with a recipe full of tension, drama and competition, this penultimate episode has it all.
