Survivor SA: Shock tribe shuffle sinks Gena

2014-03-03 10:44
Johannesburg - In this week’s dramatic episode of Survivor South Africa Champions, 30 year-old PR manager Gena Alkana suffered the multiple indignities of being separated from her alliance in a shock tribal shuffle, having her smuggled hidden immunity idol stolen by her new tribe mates and then being unceremoniously booted off of her new tribe, Mark Fish’s Utara, after just one day.
Prior to the tribe shuffle, Gena was sitting pretty as one of the decision-makers in Selatan's powerful Rugrats alliance. Captain Corne Krige also loved her team spirit and tried hard to swap her out for another player.

Sadly, the transfer negotiations with Mark failed, which left Selatan with just one option to save the now-sad and disappointed Gena: to get Corne to secretly give her the hidden immunity idol at the next challenge. But then Corne made a terrible blunder when he gave Gena her bag, with his whispered message to her effectively spelling out the plan to her new tribe mates.

In a blindside involving a string of lies, Utara, spurred on by the devious Marian and Shane, managed to separate Gena, who protected her belongings like a hawk on the island, from her bag. When she got it back, the hidden immunity idol “miraculously” transformed into a piece of coral.
Gena knew it was game-over for her and approached both David and Shane to find out more, naming Marian as her lead suspect. Both pretended to be innocent, knowing nothing about the whereabouts of the Idol, with Shane even miming a search of Marian’s bag to maintain the charade.
The bold move to steal Gena’s Idol now leaves Shane and Marian in possession of both Hidden Immunity Idols – though their unwillingness to share that information with their alliance members means that the tribe thinks they have only one.
In her exit interview on the island, which can be viewed at, Gena said that she was sad to leave the island, "but glad that she wasn't voted off by her friends".

The tribal shuffle was a surprise to the contestants, who thought they were off to play for a reward. A tribal quiz and a revolving gate ensured their new tribal selections were randomised – though Utara’s Stephen figured out the game early on and used deliberate wrong answers to keep his tribal destination more or less in his own hands. The quiz delivered some home truths for some contestants – with David’s Rugrats alliance mates’ responses all revealing that he’d be the one member who wouldn’t make it to the merge.
After consulting with the Captains – who sat the game out – Nico told the contestants to drop their buffs where they stood and take up the colours of their new tribes. Offered the opportunity to make ‘transfers’, Corne said he’d like to trade Buhle, Vel or Solly to get Gena back, but Mark declined and the tribes stood as the random selection had determined.
The new-look tribes are:
Selatan: Corne; Altaaf; Moyra; Zavion; Vel; Graham; Solly & Buhle.
Utara: Mark; Sivu; David; Stephen; Gena; Shane; Marian & Sonette.
