Survivor SA: Goodbye Sugarman!

2014-02-24 10:23
Johannesburg - Firefighter Philip Dickson, 32, from KZN saw his sole survivor hopes go up in smoke in this week’s sixth episode of M-Net’s Survivor South Africa: Champions.

Despite him being Selatan’s main fishing provider, his tribe couldn’t forgive his sugar cane-stashing habits and made him their fourth member to leave.
The ‘Hero Curse’ struck again for Selatan after Corne Krige beat his Survivor rival Mark Fish in a Captains’ Duel to secure the services of Protea Cricket legend Jonty Rhodes for the immunity challenge – which they subsequently lost. Jonty’s trademark enthusiasm – and the giant box of steak and corn he brought with him - delivered a welcome boost to Selatan, but they squandered their advantage once more and saw Utara take the immunity idol back to their camp.

Perhaps Selatan’s full stomachs got the better of them, as they’d also won a stash of hamburgers and French fries at the reward challenge  - or did the sight of the resulting feast make Utara even hungrier to beat them?
Utara celebrated their immunity challenge victory by rebuilding their camp, making themselves more comfortable in an effort to forget about their rumbling stomachs. "We never had it [the food] in the first place, so forget about it and move on,": was Mark’s motivational speech to his starving tribe.
Sensing he was in danger, Philip approached Zavion about "taking out" Moyra, but the wedding planner wouldn’t commit to a switch of allegiance. With options running out, he turned to Corne and asked him if he would be willing to play the hidden immunity idol. The Captain played it cool, agreeing that David was a weak link and Philip a provider, but wouldn’t commit to a course of action. Corne consulted Moyra about the Rugrats’ decision and she told him, wide-eyed, they he couldn’t play the idol to keep Philip in the game.
At tribal council, Philip’s position as the Rugrats’ choice seemed nailed on, but Corne was the wildcard with the Idol, despite not having a vote. When the firefighter tried to take Moyra down with him for withholding their shared sugar cane secret, he upset Corne because he hadn’t shared his secret source of sustenance with the tribe, sealing his fate. Five Rugrat votes were enough to send him on his way, with his own vote for Moyra the only blip in their exit strategy for him.
Survivor South Africa: Champions is broadcast on M-Net on Sundays at 17:30, with a repeat on M-Net Series Zone on Saturdays at 13:00.
