Black Motion on Rainbows and winning Jika Majika

Black Motion are one of the hottest acts in the country at the moment. Especially since their single Rainbow, shot up the charts and dominated radio airplay for months and months

The Juice caught up with the band's producer and percussionist, Thabo Smol, ahead of their performance at Boiler Room Stay True South Africa this week.

Here's the things we learnt and you probably didn't know about Black Motion:

The lessons they've learnt from Black Coffee

The one thing we've got from him is knowledge. Whenever we play gigs with him, he'll always give us brotherly advice about the industry. Things like what to do in certain situations, what to avoid and what direction we should be going. We always get inspiration from Black coffee. The best advice he's ever given us was to be true to ourselves and our craft and not follow trends.

On creating Rainbow

We knew people would like the song but we never thought the track would be this big. The funny thing is the track was made in 2013 and it's been like slow poison, slowly creeping up the charts until by the end of 2014, it was everywhere. Even when we played it in New York people didn't really know it but they loved it and went crazy.

That one time they won Jika Majika

We are dancers and we had to do something different to avoid becoming thugs in the hood. When you dance and dance, you start thinking about creating a song that will move just like you want and that how we got into production. In Soshanguve we had a dance group who would compete and one day the Jika Majika team came to our hood and my team won. Maybe I was too shy or something but we let other people go to the show and I stayed behind. They killed it and they won.

On hitting the catwalk

We'd really love to get into that (creating a fashion label) but not right now. We don't want it to look like the music isn't going well and so we're jumping into fashion. We want to first do what we doing and once we are comfortable and have created a name for ourselves then we will venture into fashion and some other things.
