Connie Chiune: "I'm just an ordinary human being"

Connie Chiune has been entertaining SA for over 30 years.

Although she's one of our most celebrated actresses today, starting out was not easy. She told Move: "Starting out in the entertainment industry has to have been the hardest part of my career because everything depends on experience and being known."

She said she always wanted to be a musician, but performing in theatre steered her towards acting. "And when TV started in South Africa there were a few drama series which offered black actors jobs, I moved, naturally to TV," she told the mag. Since then, acting has been her love and she said she can't see herself doing anything else.

Although she gained many fans throughout the years, she said she sees herself as an ordinary person with a job. "Perfecting my craft always comes first. I don't want to be judged on what I look like. I want to be known for being good at the job I do. I didn't train in acting because I didn't have the opportunity. But what I'm working with is passion and my God given talent."

Of course, being in the public eye comes with a lot of scrutiny. Does this bother Connie? No! She told Move: "I'm not afraid of the media, although it is difficult to keep them out of my life. I'm just an ordinary human being and as people, we make mistakes and sometimes we fall, so the media reporting on me being human doesn't bother me at all."
