Government wants to resolve Tell Me Sweet Something drama

Johannesburg - The drama surrounding the dropping of Tell Me Sweet Something in cinemas around the country just got much more interesting, with the government now calling for a meeting to discuss the situation.

Yesterday The Juice reported how the locally produced romance film had been dropped from several cinemas, despite a strong showing at the box office. One of the film's stars, Maps Maponyane, called on cinemas to give local productions more support (read more about that here).

The situation has caused quite a stir online, and has been the talk of the town this week, and now even the government has got involved.

Arts and Culture minister Nathi Mthethwa issued a statement this week, where has called on cinemas to "come to the party and play their part in sustaining the promotion of South African films to South African audiences."

"It is not enough to simply hold the profit motive aloft, while the South African story is not allowed to sustain its presence and capture the imagination of our audiences,” the minister added.

He has called for a meeting between film stakeholders to resolve the issue.

The film's leading actress, Nomzamo Mbatha, took to social media to repost the statement, thanking the minister for his support and simply adding: "Look at God."
