Isibaya's Muzi Mthabela 'U-turns' on priesthood

Johannesburg - Muzi Mthabela's home is filled with love and God but if the walls could talk they would tell stories of an incredible spiritual journey.

The Isibaya actor is adored for his role Duma on the popular soapie but, as he revealed to Drum recently, acting is a path he almost never walked.

You see, Muzi almost became a priest.

"That meant I could not have a girlfriend or sexual intercourse my whole life and I was prepared to do it," he admits.

But by the time he had matriculated he felt the responsibility was too great for him and he instead pursued a career in production.

Within a couple of years, Muzi had swung to the other extreme and he stopped attending church altogether and started rebelling against his Christian upbringing.

Drinking, smoking and keeping a shabby rasta-inspired appearance it might have seemed like Muzi had all but lost his Christian roots but after several years he soon made his way back.

Now Muzi may not be a priest but he says he has a lot to be grateful for. And, living with his loving wife and two daughters is just one of them.
