Letoya Makhene: “I should have walked away when he spat at me"

Actress Letoya Makhene has called time on her marriage and revealed in detail how her marriage fell apart at the hands of her husband. The actress gave an exclusive interview to True Love magazine and spoke openly about her failed marriage. She says she had a happy marriage until immigration issues meant that her husband, Privilege, stopped working. She says it made him feel insecure and he took out his frustration on her, often physically abusing her.

“The abuse went on for a good few years because I was scared of him. I lost my confidence. I was at a stage in my life that even when I was talking to people, I couldn’t look them in the eye because I was so traumatised," she explains

She says the turning point came when she was consulting with a sick man and Privilege burst into her practice and demanded to speak to her immediately and would not allow her to finish her consultation.

She says she consulted with an attorney quickly and privately so that neither of their families would talk her out of it.   "I knew I should have left when I was pregnant with Nubia. It was my 21st birthday and we went away for the weekend to fix things. I remember I was very sad and he said something to me in the shower, and as I got out, he stuck his foot out and I tripped. I was seven-months pregnant with our daughter."
