Maggie Benedict acquitted of theft

Johannesburg - For a while, actress Maggie Benedict was afraid she might spend time in jail over charges of theft relating to an incident where it was claimed she had stolen a box of headache pills valued at R17.49.

After more than a year and a half, Maggie has finally been vindicated.

The judge ruled that the state wasn't able to prove beyond reasonable doubt that she had taken the pills.

Throughout the case, Maggie maintained that she already had the pills in her bag and that she was innocent.

Although there has been no press statement from Maggie herself, she was photographed leaving the court house with a big smile on her face.

We're glad it's over!

Raghunandan said she was satisfied that the pills were from a Checkers store based on its labelling‚ but she could not conclusively find that the store’s security system was in working order.

The prosecution called two witnesses who testified that the Checkers security system is checked for defects daily‚ but failed to call the person who checked the system on the day Benedict tripped the alarm.

Benedict smiled and embraced her lawyer as she left the dock after proceedings.
