Movie news: Banned Nigerian flick to air in SA

The Durban International Film Festival line up just got sooo much more exciting now that we've heard the banned Half of a Yellow Sun film will make it's SA premiere at the festival later this month

The film, a screen adaption of Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s hit novel, deals with the Nigerian Civil War of the 1960's and has been banned by the Nigeria for showing "clearly stated objectionable scenes" that may "undermine national security" but the film will still be shown at the South African festival being held from the 17th to 27th of July in Durban.

The film was first seen at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, where it caught the imagination of the audiences before having a limited cinema run in the US. Nigeria then banned the movie from being flighted in it's homeland because of the fear it might incite violence. The censorship caused a massive debate both in the country and out with the author herself saying she was disappointed in the censorship and saying "we cannot hide from our history".
