In a nutshell: Joburg based Indie-Folk rock band, Bye Beneco, have been on the fringe of a musical explosion for some time now. But with the release of their debut album, Space Elephant, will this be the moment their music catches South Africa alight?
What’s it like: A back massage by a Chinese tourist - It's not what you expect, but it's brilliant! Looking at the band members and their bands odd name you would be forgiven for thinking Bye Beneco are a hippy band with a narrow sound. Instead, Bye Beneco are anything but that. They get really excited when they play to their Folk-sound strength while pushing boundaries with haunting vocals.
Fave Bit: Although the likes of Overwhelm, The Show and title track, Space Elephant, are obvious highlights; the true star of the show remains their single, Paraffin. It's folk, it's mysterious and it's flippin catchy. The vocals and beat on the track seem to have been made for each other, which gives it a comfortable feel that you can't help be caught up in.
Rating: After playing the local Indie/Folk scene for months, Bye Beneco's debut album, Space Elephant, was one of the most anticipated albums of 2014. It doesn't disappoint. Bye Beneco deliver a fresh feel to the local folk scene with vocals and instrumentals so strong and recognisable it's hard to imagine a time you listened to anything else 5/5
