5 cool things about South Africa’s Olympic female soccer team

Cape Town – The national female soccer team, who are affectionately known as Banyana Banyana, are representing SA at the 2016 Olympics in Brazil. 

Here are some cool facts about five of the players named in the team to get you in the know before the games officially kick-off on Friday. 

1. Goalkeeper Roxanne Barker plays for Dutch regional club side Scheerenveen Vrouwen.  

The club wished her good luck in her opening game of the tournament on Twitter. 


2. Midfielder Stephanie Malherbe was born and raised in the USA, but has South African parents, which gives her South African citizenship.

4. Defender, Sanah Mollo has a degree in marketing from the University of Free State and works at Telkom as an operational specialist according to The Sunday Times. 



5. Midfielder Robyn Moodaly plays in America for the AIB College of Business Eagles in Des Moines, Iowa according to her Wikipedia page. 

The ladies played their first game on Wednesday, 3 August against Sweden and lost narrowly, 1-0.
