Johannesburg – TV, radio, and comedy – Skhumba Hlophe has proven that he is a man of many talents. The Juice had a chat with this Comics’ Choice Awards nominee to find out more about his life as comedian, the questions he hates being asked, and weather or not he was having a good day.
Take a look at our chat here:
What’s one question people should stop asking comedians?
Can you tell me a joke.
What’s one question you want people to ask, but they never do?
How was your day? Ask about my day.
How was your day, Skhumba?
I’ve had a busy day, I don’t know what’s wrong with me.
Why did you choose comedy?
When I’m around people, they start laughing at what I’m doing and what I’m saying. So I found myself on stage. And I loved it.
What happened at your first show?
The first show we had about 50 people, and 42 of them was the staff, 8 of them were my friends. No one came to our show.
What have you learned from comedy?
That people are stressed out there and they use us as the remedy. Majority of the people that are in those crowds are depressed or stressed and they want to laugh their problems off.
What were you like in high school?
I was the class clown, and I wasn’t that smart. I was not in the top 10, that I’m sure of. I was not in the bottom 10, and I was not in the top 10. At school there was about 53 of us in one class. I was probably number 24.
What sets you apart?
Not much, but I would say I ain’t scared. I ain’t scared to take a risk.
Which local celeb would you like to see venture into comedy?
Dj Fresh.
If you could choose between radio, comedy, and TV, which one would it be?
Radio, anytime. The thing about radio is that when you switch on that microphone, it’s on. TV you’ve still got to edit. With radio it’s not like that.
