7 awesome music acts at the Red Bull Academy Weekender fest

Cape Town – From Thursday, 1 September until Sunday, 4 September six iconic music venues in and around downtown Johannesburg, including Bassline, 1 Fox and Zone 6 will be bursting at the seams with talented musicians from every genre for the Red Bull Music Academy Weekender festival .

This will be the first time that the festival, which includes exhibitions, lectures and workshops will be held on African soil after having travelled the world.  

The high point of proceedings will be when 1 Fox in downtown Joburg hosts New Zealand natives and global sensations Fat Freddy’s Drop. Fat Freddy’s Drop are a seven-piece band from Wellington whose musical style has been characterised as any combination of dub, reggae, soul, jazz, rhythm and blues, and techno.

Including that headlining performance there will also be 60 spectacular acts at this jam packed gathering, spread out at various venues, so we’ve highlighted some artists you might not want to miss and followed by the ticket information. 


1. Moonchild Sanelly

Joburg based artist, Moonchild Sanelly, blends a transcendent voice with sounds that will have your head bopping to the beat. 

Here’s her track called: Fox with that featuring Maramza, to give you a taste of her sound. 

2. Culoe De Song

He might be young but Culoe De Song is a music legend, house pioneer and almost always the coolest guy in the room. He also participated in the 2008 edition of this Barcelona, Spain.

Here’s one of his hottest tracks: Nguwe featuring Thandiswa Mazwai. 


3. Sketchy Bongo and Aewon Wolf

Producer and DJ Sketchy Bongo who has taken over the radio charts with his pop-infused genre bending tunes will be performing with lyrical master Aewon Wolf. Bongo's other collaborations are always innovative with hooks that will get stuck in your head for days.

Here’s his song: Wildside featuring Kyle Deutsch, Aewon Wolf and Shekinah.

4. Riky Rick

What more is there to say about Boss Zonke, that he hasn’t said himself. He’s earnest, sexy and smart. Riky Rick has the game on lock. Here’s his latest single: Sidlukotini on his new record label

5. AKA 

Love him or hate him AKA is one of the most talked about artists in South Africa today. His raps, tweets and personal life are the stuff of tabloid headlines. 

Here’s his single titled: All Eyes on Me.  

6. Patoranking

Nigerian dancehall artist Patoranking, might be new to South African audiences but he is a household name in his native Lagos and beyond. 

Here’s his Girlie 'O' Remix ft. Tiwa Savage.

7. DJ Black Coffee

Multiple award winner and globetrotting superstar DJ Black Coffee is some of the best musical talent South Africa has to over. Not only that, but he’s humble and hardworking. 

Here is his collaboration with Mque titled Come With Me.

Both day and full weekend passes are available, ensuring you can create the RBMA Weekender experience that suits you.

A limited number of Early Bird tickets have just been released at only R400 for the full weekend. Thereafter weekend passes will be R500. Tickets can be bought here.

Saturday 3 September: R400
Sunday 4 September: R120
