Afrikaans actress Marga van Rooy dies

Cape Town – Afrikaans veteran actress Marga van Rooy, 75, died on Sunday afternoon following a battle with cancer, according to online reports.

Van Rooy was best known for her roles in TV shows like Vetkoekpaleis, Egoli and Molly & Wors. She also starred in an impressive collection of local films including, Nommer Asseblief, Lipstiek Dipstiek, Panic Mechanic and most recently 'n Paw-Paw Vir My Darling.

Afrikaans TV star, Lizz Meiring paid tribute to Van Rooy on social media, tweeting: "My mother-in-law in Molly & Wors, the wonderful Marga van Rooy has died. She was recently diagnosed with cancer. Will miss you, lovely Marga. RIP."

Wim Vorster, a prominent figure in South African theatre circles, also confirmed the news of Van Rooy’s death.

"Marga van Rooy died this afternoon at 14:20. The big C," Vorster wrote on Facebook whilst adding his condolences to Marga’s co-workers, friends and family.

Netwerk24 reported in December 2016 that Van Rooy was seriously ill and undergoing surgery.
