Black Coffee adds cream

Johannesburg - DJ Black Coffee hosted a pre-going away back-cracking soiree on Thursday at the up-market nightclub Taboo in Sandton.

This was the ending to the DJ search competition as well as a send-off that Black Coffee and men’s fragrance Axe worked on together in the hope of finding the next big thing in House music. The winner will get the chance to go on tour with one of the biggest names in House music right now and possibly use this rare opportunity to break new ground and make a name.

The finalists squared off against each other and each contestant got the chance to play a 20-minute set.

Joburg, which is never an easy crowd, was hard to impress on the night. The hosts, Maps Maponyane and Thando Thabethe, could attest to the crowd being tough as even a few of their lines and jokes fell flat.

Black Coffee made a rather subtle entrance to the club ... no announcement or big fuss. He just rocked up sporting his injured hand in a brace, which seems to be something he decided is time to do.

Deep House music was the order of the day, although it must be said that DJ PH, who blessed the swanky club with a hip-hop set, delivered the strongest performance of the night.

The man of the moment also played quite a stellar set that had his celebrity buddies, such as David Tlale, dancing the night away.

Meanwhile, Pearl Thusi was also around, as was DJ Zinhle, who at one point could not resist the urge to twerk just a little for her boyfriend.

Black Coffee will be heading off soon along with the winner of the competition. If he plans to play anything similar to what he did on this night, Ibiza had better prepare for arguably our best artistic export.
