Caster Semenya named among TIME's 100 Most Influential People of 2019

Cape Town - South African middle-distance runner and 2016 Olympic gold medalist, Caster Semenya, has been named one of TIME magazine's 100 Most Influential People of 2019.

Dwayne Johnson, Taylor Swift, Sandra Oh, Gayle King, soccer star Mohamed Salah and Nancy Pelosi are the six cover stars for the annual issue.

Inside the issue, those on the list are paired with a famous friend or colleague who wrote a short piece about the figure and their accomplishments.

The categories for the issue are divided into pioneers, artists, leaders, icons and titans, with celebrities dominating the list.

Caster features in the icons category alongside Taylor Swift, Michelle Obama, Lady Gaga and Spike Lee.

Former Olympic gold medalist and track and field athlete, Edwin Moses, wrote about Caster saying: "Caster Semenya has taught us that sex isn't always binary and caused us to question the justness of distributing societal benefits according to "male" and "female" classifications."

About her efforts in making strides in sports eligibility, he says: "But however it is addressed, Semenya will have already made a singular historical contribution to our understanding of biological sex."

Other famous South African faces on the list include Cyril Ramaphosa and Trevor Noah, who appeared on last year's list, wrote a piece about his colleague Hasan Minhaj.
