Celeb sex tape fame: Is it a thing in SA?

Many celebrities kick off their career with a sex tape scandal. Does that happen in Mzansi as well? We take a look!

Cape Town - A leaked sex tape propelled Kim Kardashian to superstardom, and now younger sister, Kylie’s x-rated video with ex-bae, Tyga, was allegedly leaked online last week.

Sure, Kim Kardashian is now worth millions, dare we say billions. But can a sex tape make you famous in SA?

Law student, Pulane Lenkoe, trended on Twitter for three days after nude pictures of her were leaked online by her ex-boyfriend last year.

A number of celebrities including Trevor Noah, Cassper Nyovest and Black Coffee saw and commented on the pictures. And since the incident she has been romantically linked to former Kaizer Chiefs player Katlego Mphela.

There are still those who suspect that Pulane, might have leaked the pictures herself, all in the name of fame. Let us not forget that after the dust settled, she landed herself a feature role in L-Tido’s music video for Dlala Ka Yona. And her Twitter following grew from 400 to 40 000 virtually overnight.

Faith Nketsi‚ South Africa’s self-proclaimed ‘Queen of Twerk‚’ isn’t just well known for her twerking videos, earlier this year, a very explicit video of her and her man was accidentally leaked on social media. And it got the Twitterverse talking, alright!

Was it a mistake or done on purpose?

One can say that technology and social media have made people famous that aren’t necessarily that talented or gifted. But with a simple click of a button, the whole world can know your name.

Is it worth it? We weigh the pros and cons:

Pros:

·      The initial shock will eventually blow over and the internet will move on to the next best thing.
·      It’s a quick way to gain a social media following.
·      You name will be known worldwide, and might lead to publicity opportunities.

Cons:

·      It might affect your chances of being considered for certain jobs.
·      If it’s on the internet, you won’t be able to get the footage or clips easily removed.
·      There are certain legal ramifications when posting a sex tape online without the other person’s consent.

Would you consider leaking nudes or a sex tape online for fame? Take our poll below.
