Cape Town - Afrikaans singer Karlien van Jaarsveld opens up about her painful divorce from Derick Hougaard in the latest issue of Huisgenoot.
The local musician - who is married to former rugby player Joe Breytenbach - says her life right now is in strong contrast to a time when she was, "caught in a painful place."

The Sing vir Liefde hitmaker tells Huisgenoot that when she married Derick in 2013, the thought of divorce never crossed her mind. She talks about her parents' bitter divorce and remembers how "painful" it was.
That is the reason she told herself that she would never get divorced. She recalls an especially hurtful comment from someone, and talks about how painful it was when people assumed she would just pack up and leave her family behind.
Speaking about her divorce from Derick she says: "It was after three years of non-stop pain. I thought the problems Derick and I had before our marriage would change or end."

But now she realises that the warning signs should have lit up when she broke off their engagement in August 2012, but seven months later they were married.
"I realise now that if you have any inkling of doubt, you shouldn't get married. The problems will only get worse," she tells the Afrikaans lifestyle magazine.
Despite the nasty experience she says that she would never want to turn back time because of the two children - Eliah and Daniel - the couple share together. She also still carries the memory of their daughter Evah, the singer lost at 19 weeks.
