PICS: Sarie crowns its new cover girl

Cape Town - 35-year-old Centurion art teacher Emari Gieselbach has been named the 10th winner of the Sarie "Voorbladgesig" competition.

Emari will be on Sarie's sought-after October cover no less than four times.

Announcing the winner on Wednesday, editor Michélle van Breda revealed Emari would be featured on four different covers when Sarie goes on sale 24 September - a first for the magazine.

"All four covers are beautiful. But seen together they show Emari's versatility, playfulness and ease in front of the lens. She owned the photo session. It was impossible to ignore her!" she said.

While Emari is the overall winner, 25-year-old Cape Town secretary Charicke Carolus won the 18-30 category.

The glitzy spring event was held at The Greenhouse Café on Rosemary Hill Farm outside Pretoria. Two hundred guests attended event, including Miss South Africa Tamaryn Green, who is featured on Sarie's September cover, and television, film and music celebrities.

Also in attendance were last year's two winners (they shared the title and appeared on two separate covers), Ceres pastry chef Yolani Abrahams and Nadia de Wet, who lives on a farm in Standerton. Elana Afrika-Bredenkamp, TV personality and Jacaranda radio presenter, hosted the event.

The event was filmed for TV and will be featured in the final episode of the kykNET series Sarie Voorbladgesig on DStv channel 144 on Tuesday 25 September at 17:30. In the programme viewers will be able to watch as Emari is awarded her October cover.

Emari was chosen from thousands of entries countrywide, following an intense cover photo shoot by renowned Johannesburg photographer Leana Clunies-Ross.

The competition, unique for South Africa, is in its eighth year and Emari the tenth receiver of the title. (In 2016 and in 2017 the title was shared by two readers.) This has been the second year TV viewers were able to follow the ten contestants' journey to feature on the cover.

Emari teaches art at Sutherland High School in Eldoraigne, Centurion, and is mother to two daughters. She plans to celebrate her eleventh wedding anniversary and renew her vows with husband Marinus later this month at the Graceland Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas.

One of a pair of twins Charicke believes every woman deserves to be on a cover. Matriculating from Monument Park High in Kraaifontein she now works as secretary at a Cape Town law firm. She hopes to travel more and make a success of her modelling career.
