Johannesburg - She’s holding her own against the likes of AKA, Nasty C, and Black Coffee. Nonqaba Nozuko Rwaxa, stage name Ms Cosmo, is the only woman in the line-up at the annual Ekurhuleni Spring Fiesta.
She has two new singles that have been making waves. Rwaxa says she wants to empower other women in society and in the music industry.
“My aim is to work with young female talent in the country. As you can see in most of my recent singles, they have female elements in them.
"I learnt a lot – that women can work as a team – because they were cooperating well with me,” she says.
The Soweto-born 29-year-old recently released a hit single titled Connect, featuring award-winning artists Kwesta, Nasty C and Rouge.
“The good news is that my first music video, Connect, is about to hit 500 000 views on YouTube,” she says.
While her fans were busy falling in love with it, the 5FM radio host dropped a second hit single titled Ay Baby featuring Moozlie, Rouge and Sho Madjozi.
Rwaxa, also a music producer, is not just musically gifted.
She graduated from the University of Johannesburg with a BCom degree, after which she enrolled at the Fuse Academy, a DJing school co-founded by DJ Zinhle.
Ms Cosmo reads the traffic report on the Roger Goode breakfast slot and hosts her hip-hop show named The Stir Up – both on 5FM.
“I fell in love with hip-hop at the age of 11 and since then I have been listening to it,” she says.
Rwaxa has been in talks with international musicians about possible collaborations, even though she is not quite ready to release an album.
She wants to “unite nations” with her music show and producing skills.
“I am planning on working with international artists like Vanessa Mdee and Ice Prince,” she says.
There is a lot of talent in Africa that can meet international standards.
“I believe young people should work hard when it comes to what they love, especially in the music space, and also not forget about their studies, because education is very important,” she says.
