Political parties congratulate Demi-Leigh on her Miss Universe win

Johannesburg – South African political parties have extended their congratulations to newly crowned Miss Universe, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters.

22-year-old Miss South Africa, Demi-Leigh Nel Peters, was crowned Miss Universe in Las Vegas on Sunday. 

Minister in the Presidency Responsible for Women, Ms. Susan Shabangu congratulated Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters on being crowned Miss Universe 2017 in an official press statement. 

"Let us celebrate this great victory of our nation. Nel-Peters, a graduate in business management, hoisted the South African flag high, undoubtedly she will keep on representing the country well and add a voice to the emancipation of women here at home and across the globe," said Minister Shabangu.

The African National Congress Youth League on Monday also issued an official statement congratulating Demi-leigh on winning the Miss Universe title.

“This victory by Ms Nel-Peters who becomes the second South African to win this competition after Margaret Gardiner from Cape Town who won the 1978 competition, is indeed celebration for the entire country and not just her hometown of Sedgefield. We hope that she will use this position of influence to become a good role model for young girls in the country, the continent and even the globe. Her rise to the thrown must become a source of inspiration for many other young people in this country,” the statement reads.

"Our nation is immensely proud of Ms Leigh for this tremendous achievement.  She has hoisted the South African flag higher and continues to inspire many young women who look up to her, to reach even higher for their dreams.  We congratulate her most heartily and wish her all the best during her reign which is South Africa's reign," said President Zuma.
